Can you take Glucosamine Chondroitin if you have gout? Or should you not since it contains shellfish?

Can you answer Seth C’s question about Arthritis?:

I have heard gout can be triggered by shellfish, so if this is true should someone stay away from the Glucosamine Chondroitin pills since they contain shellfish and might cause a flare up of gout?

Arthritis Feedback: Wish I knew more about this, haven’t heard anything. You can google on “gout glucosamine” and see what you find.

If shellfish is high in purines, it will add more uric acid to your system. If your body gets too much uric acid, it pools in the joints, then forms crystals, then immune system attacks, then you get inflammation and the painful gout.

I don’t know if the amount of shellfish in the GC would be high enough to cause problems. Talk to your doctor.

Check, it’s the best website I’ve found for general info on anything gout. They may or may not have anything about GC, but it’ll help you do other things to get rid of your gout.

    Good luck to you!
